FireKeepers Casino 400:

Last week’s dramatic ending clinched a win for Austin Dillon and alienated fans and other drivers, so we’ve got some potential sparks this week in the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Dillon’s win, however, did not count for the playoffs based on NASCAR’s announcement on Wednesday afternoon.

The drivers will run around the big, two-mile track in Brooklyn, Michigan in what is the 24th race of 26 scheduled for the regular season. Daytona and Darlington are the only two tracks left after this week, so the playoff chances are dwindling for those on the outside looking in.

2024 NASCAR Cup Series Standings

Dillon’s aforementioned win came after he wrecked Joey Logano on the final lap and also made contact with Denny Hamlin. While fans were not eager to see Dillon, who ranks 26th in points after the win, in the playoffs, his only route to the postseason was to get a win and he got it…at least until NASCAR took it away.

Kyle Larson is the only driver with four wins. Christopher Bell, Hamlin, and William Byron all have three wins each. Ryan Blaney is the only driver with two wins. Alex Bowman, Joey Logano, Tyler Reddick, Chase Elliott, Brad Keselowski, Daniel Suarez, Austin Cindric, and now Dillon all have one win each. That was Dillon’s first top-five finish of the season.

With that win, Larson now has the most Bonus Playoff Points with 28. Bell’s 25 points rank second. Hamlin is next with 21 points. There are 18 full-time drivers with playoff points and five – Bell, Larson, Hamlin, Byron, and Blaney – are in double digits.

The first playoff race is the Quaker State 400 on September 8 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

FireKeepers Casino 400 Winners

Logano likes big tracks and this one is no different, as he’s a three-time winner at Michigan in his last 10 starts. Larson also has three wins over the last 10 races. Hamlin has picked up a couple victories as well. Blaney, Chris Buescher, and Kyle Busch.

Buescher’s win came in last year’s rain-delayed race that started on Sunday and finished on Monday.
