Unlike the majority of seasons this millennium for the St. Louis Cardinals, this one will not yield a playoff appearance. However, the battle for a winning season continues for St. Louis on the road against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday.

Erick Fedde gets the start for St. Louis. He enters with a 3.38 ERA overall this season, but has seen his ERA rise to 4.07 since joining the Cardinals at the trade deadline.

The biggest issue Fedde has had is pitching on the road. Across his time with the Chicago White Sox and Cardinals, he has a 1.94 ERA at home compared to a 4.50 ERA on the road, with 1.4 home runs per nine innings allowed in his road starts compared to 0.6 home runs per nine innings at home.

The Rockies lineup Fedde faces has the largest hitting home and road splits in the league. The Rockies enter Tuesday averaging over five runs per five runs per game at home compared to 3.5 runs per game on the road, with their batting third in the league at home at .268 compared to .217 on the road, which is last among the 30 MLB teams.

Former Cardinals pitcher Austin Gomber gets the start for the Rockies. Gomber has given up lots of contact with issuing just 2.1 walks per nine innings, but also getting only 6.4 strikeouts per nine innings with 1.7 home runs per nine innings for a 4.67 ERA.

Gomber, whose 30 total home runs allowed leads the National League, has these numbers jump to a 4.82 ERA at home with two home runs per nine innings at Coors Field, all while being back by a Rockies bullpen that entered Tuesday with a league-worst 5.31 ERA. No other team has worse than a 4.82 bullpen ERA.

With the Cardinals 13th in the league with a 3.73 ERA in their bullpen since July 1, Wednesday’s showdown sets up for a slugfest.
